Налогообложение, бремя которого должны нести лица или организации, не уплачивающие непосредственно данные налоги (сравни: direct taxation (прямое налогообложение)). Основным косвенным налогом в Великобритании является VAT (value added tax) - НДС (налог на добавленную стоимость), который уплачивают продавцы, когда товары или услуги поступают в оборот, но бремя которого в конце концов ложится на потребителей товаров или услуг. Одним из достоинств косвенных налогов является то, что они могут собираться с относительно немногочисленных источников при одновременно широком их экономическом эффекте.
